Using the Great Desert Tracks CD with OziExplorer

Setup Steps

(It is assumed you have already purchased the Great Desert Tracks maps on CD).

1. If you have not purchased OziExplorer, to test the loading of the maps, download the "Trial" version of OziExplorer (Download Option 2) from the OziExplorer software web page.
2. 2nd Edition GDT maps - (released March 2003) - (see step 2 below for previous version - Release 1 maps)
The six (6) OziExplorer .map files required to load the map images from the CD are on the 2nd Edition Great Desert Tracks CD. These can be used several ways.
(a) If you have already installed the Great Desert Tracks from the CD, the 6 files with the .map file extension can be copied from the "Maps" folder under the location where you installed the Great Desert Tracks to the maps folder under OziExplorer (eg. you can create a "gdt" folder - c:\oziexplorer\maps\gdt). (Note: If you do not copy the files, OziExplorer can still load the maps from the CD by opening the .map files directly from the folder where you installed the Great Desert Tracks (usually "c:\Hema\Great Desert Tracks\Maps" folder.)
(b) If you do not install Great Desert Tracks, you can copy the 6 files with the .map extension directly from the CD to the maps folder under OziExplorer. (You may need to ensure the copied files are not "read only" files).
3. In OziExplorer configuration, on the Map Images tab, make sure that "Always Check All CD Drives" is ticked. The map image files will be found provided the CD is in any CDROM drive.
4. To open a map press the Load button on the Toolbar, Select the Load Map From File option on the menu. Use the dialog to go to the folder where you placed the .map files (eg.  c:\oziexplorer\maps\gdt) and place the Great Desert Tracks CD in the CDROM drive. Open the file, it should find the map image on the CD and open it up.
5. There are of course many configuration options in OziExplorer which can change the way it behaves and you will need to gradually learn how to use these to gain the full benefit of the software. A good place to start is to read the tutorial available on the help menu. There is of course a great deal of other help available also and it is particularly worthwhile reading the Configuration section about Map paths and Map Image paths.

2. Step 2 for Release 1 of the Great Desert Tracks (does not apply to 2nd Edition release)
The six (6) OziExplorer .map files required to load the map images from the Great Desert Tracks CD cannot be copied directly from the Release 1 CD.  These can be obtained in several ways.
(a) From the Australian Page of our website (or download from here) as a self-installing exe file. Run this exe file to install the .map files.   You can change the folder where these files will be installed, the default is (c:\oziexplorer\maps\gdt).
(b) If you have already installed the Great Desert Tracks from the CD to your hard disk, copy the 6 files with the .map file extension from the maps sub-folder under the folder where you installed the Great Desert Tracks to the maps folder under OziExplorer (eg. you can create a "gdt" folder - c:\oziexplorer\maps\gdt).
