SRTM Height Data Download

This option will download the SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) height data. The files are downloaded which cover the region of the map currently being viewed on the screen.

NOTE: A connection to the internet is required to download this data.

SRTM covers the region of the world from 60 degrees South to 60 degrees North.

Three types of SRTM data can be downloaded.

1. CGIAR Consortium for Spatial Information (CGIAR-CSI)

2. NASA 3 Second data (approx 90m grid)

3. NASA USA 1 Second data (approx 30m grid)

Caution is needed as it is possible to specify a region of a map on the screen which requires many hundreds or thousands of files to be downloaded. A large number of files will require a long time to download and a lot of disk space.

CGIAR downloaded files are stored in a sub-folder of the Grid ASCII Elevation Data File Path.

NASA SRTM downloaded files are stored in a sub-folder of the Globe (Arcview) Elevation Data File Path.

Note : On completion of the download, the Elevation Configuration settings are changed/configured to automatically use the data. If you are already using other types of Height Data be aware that your configuration may change.

Hint : After downloading the height data, turn on the "Show Elevation Display" option on the 3D/Elevation Menu to see the elevation at the cursor position.
