United States and Territories (Antarctica is not
supported).
The USGS Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) contains
name and locative information about almost 2 million physical and cultural features
located throughout the United States and its Territories.
Data for the U.S.A. and Antarctica is available from
the US Geological Survey (USGS).
Note: Antarctica is not supported at this stage. The data format is different to the
U.S.A. data format.
Datafiles available for download (IMPORTANT)
The data for each State or Territory is available in the following format.
"|" and the older Tab Delimited Formats Supported
- These files are a special format and have "deci" in the filename. Do not change the filename, it is important that the filename is left unchanged.
- These text files for most states are large and a compressed file (.zip) can be downloaded (this is quicker to download). You do not need to uncompress it, NAMESRCH program will do that for you.
(Note: the National File which contains all state
files combined into one large file cannot be used, it is too large.)
