If you find that OziExplorerCE cannot report speeds <5km per hour, the problem is that the GPS has Static Navigation turned ON.

This is a setting in the SIRF III GPS Receivers called "Static Navigation". It is possible to turn Static Navigation OFF. Some PDA's already have an option to do this but others do not. In this case there are several utilities available on the internet which allow you to turn off Static Navigation.

The SirfTech program works well and may be the best one to try.

Another program which can be used is spGPSView.  Download the utility spGPSView from here

How to turn on Static Navigation on PDA's which have built-in Sirf III GPS Receivers using spGPSView.

  1. Download spGPSView from the above link. The download file is a ZIP file "spgps.zip". Use an un-zipper program like WinZip to extract the program "SP GPS View.exe"
  2. Copy this .exe file to a folder on your PDA. (ActiveSync / Explore can be used for this)
  3. Make sure you have no other programs running which have the GPS port open.
  4. Run the "SP GPS View.exe" file on your PDA.
  5. Perform the following operations in Sp GPS View.
  6. Press the "Comms" Menu / "Select Port" option. Select the Com Port and the Baud rate your built-in GPS uses. You will need to change this - the default is COM1 but it will be a different COM port. If you do not know the baud rate, try 4800 first.
  7. Static Navigation can only be turned off with the GPS in Sirf Mode. Click the "Comms" Menu / "Start Sirf" option. (If you receive an error message, the Com Port or the Baud Rate may be incorrect. Check the Com Port and Baud Rate your GPS uses and reselect them as discussed above).
  8. On the popup dialog "Set Sirf Binary Baud Rate" click OK. The information received from the satellites will be listed
  9. On the "Commands" menu select the "Static Navigation" option and select "Off"
  10. Press the "Comms" menu / "Stop" option to stop binary output.
  11. Press the "Comms" menu / "Start NMEA" option to switch the GPS back to output NMEA.
  12. Press the "Comms" menu / "Stop" option.
  13. Press the "File" menu / "Exit" to exit the program.

Now when you use OziExplorerCE, speeds less the 5kph can be determined.
