Sources of Geographic Names Data

Most Countries Worldwide (EXCLUDING the United States and Antarctica).
The GEOnet Names Server (GNS) provides access to the National Imagery and Mapping Agency's (NIMA) database of foreign geographic feature names. The database is the official repository of foreign place-name decisions approved by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (US BGN). Approximately 20,000 of the database's 3.7 million features are updated monthly. Geographic Area of Coverage: Worldwide excluding the United States and Antarctica. The files are either text files or zip files and are not in customary gazetteer format.

Download World Cities Database

For download of World Cities Database for use in OziExplorer Name Search option. This file is in (.zip) format. The "World Cities.names" file must be extracted directly into the folder where your names database files are located. (this will normally be the folder "Name Search" under the "OziExplorer" folder).

DOWNLOAD THE FILES IN ZIP (.zip) FORMAT for converting and collating into your OziExplorer Database. Data for each Country or Region is mostly available in zip format. However some of the files for particular countries are not compressed in the zip format and are in text (.txt) format.  Both formats are acceptable for the Name Search Software program.
